Native Indian Art - Canadian Native Art - Pugwis with Kingfisher Mask

Artist: Troy Roberts
Tribal affiliation: Kwakiutl

Man-of-the-Sea is an undersea spirit in human form.  Pugwis is depicted with a fish-like face, round eyes in well-defined round sockets, gills, prominent, rounded contours on the face; and two large, beaver-like front teeth.  Sometimes Kingfisher sits on top of his head.

The kingfisher is a straight-billed, colourful, crested shorebird.  People admire the bird's fishing skills; it is patient, agile and quick.  As a creature at home in various environments, the solitary and resourceful kingfisher is also useful as a spirit guide.
